Teachers employed by the Teachers Service Commission got a ride shock on Wednesday when TSC together with their unions a signed for a CBA that required teachers to undergo a compulsory training for them to renew their teaching certificate.
According to TSC,the training is supposed to take place for a period of 30 years. This means a graduate teacher for instance will have to remain a student in his prime years till the period of retirement at 69 years.
It was a great concern considering that the Unions which are supposed to fight for teachers right decided to side with TSC , especially after the former KNUT secretary general Wilson Sossion exited from the union when he was replaced by Mr.Collins Oyuu.
However, not is all lost.Kuppet branch if Migori and Traits Taveta have raised concerns about the whole process.
Taita Taveta branch has requested the teacher employer to address the areas of concern. For instance, they argue that the whole process is not an emergency issue and so consultation was deemed necessary.
Furthermore, it is the duty of the employer according to the new constitution to cater for capacity building workshop and not the employee.
Migori branch argues that due to devolution. It is necessary for the program to be enrolled at county level and not the 4 selected Universities to train more than 300,000 teachers amidst covid-19 pandemic.
