Global Victory for Kenyatta University Law Students

The international committee of the Red Cross hosted an all-Africa competition on the international humanitarian law in Nairobi where university students across all reputable institutions in the continent were contained. Emerged top were two law students representing Kenya from Kenyatta University. Gladys Nyangweso and Raphael Gitau from the school of law in Kenyatta University were announced winners after a tough contest alongside participants from Kigali independent university (Rwanda), Obafemi Awolowo University (Nigeria), Kampala international university (Uganda), University of juba (South Sudan), and Bahir dar University (Ethiopia).

Several scenarios and lectures which constituted role-playing to place IHL into action were conducted that required the students to provide a solution to the challenges posed. The main focus of the awards was to bring up a conscious individual in the continent who will increase interest and awareness in academic institutions.

The two heroes, who had massive knowledge in international criminal law, were recognized for this distinct feature. The judging panel which consisted of ICRC legal experts in a debate also appointed Raphael Gitau as the best speaker. In response to emerging a winner, Raphael commented that the competition was distinct which triggered a very important competitive element. “we were very glad to win and this has motivated us to believe we can do more with our law degrees outside of private practice”, stated Gitau
