The role of Teachers Service Commission (TSC) as pertaining to teachers is to register, recruit and employ, assign in any public school and to exercise disciplinary control over them.
The constitution (2010) also tasks it with the responsibility of reviewing the standards of education and training of persons entering its teaching force. It is charged with checking the demands for any supply of teaching as well as advising the national government on matters relating to the profession.
Therefore, the commission has proposed entry requirements for each of the following pre-service teacher education levels.
(a) Diploma in ECD
(b) Diploma in Primary Teacher Education
(c) Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education
(d) BA/BSC with Postgraduate Diploma in Education.
The entry qualifications for primary teacher education are outlined below.
1. The certificate be declared redundant
2. Minimum mean grade C or its equivalent at KCSE.
3. C plain in all cluster subjects
4. Teachers at this level must be able to teach all subjects at grade 1 to 6. Some specialization is required for indigenous and foreign languages.
