The government of Kenya is doing everything possible to ensure that the students are safe in schools.Education CS Professor George Magoha and other education stakeholders have been having physical visits to sampled schools in the country to ascertain the levels of preparedness of the schools. This has also seen the CS rub shoulders with some of the county education officials. He has also been overseeing the distribution of the prototype desks in schools inorder to boost the social distancing in schools.
KEMRI has projected a sharp rise in Covid 19 infections next month due to the opening of schools.Even though the strict CS has downplayed this projection by insisting that the schools are safe.Indeed no schools have been reported to have had infections since January 4th.The only challenge is that the CS had barred the media from accessing the schools.
School principals are the school managers. They are responsible for everything in schools. They have always been the financial managers too in schools. However, some of the principals have suffered due to mismanagement of the schools funds. This has led to even demotions or dismissals.
Currently, the government has issued instructions to the principals not to send the students back home for school fees owing to the fact that the government has sent money to schools for both free Primary and Secondary education.Due to challenges of corruption in schools, the government is set to replace the school principals with financial managers. This means that the principals will not access the finances directly.Kuppet has already come out to challenge this move. How will this now affect the roles of the principals in schools?
