The University of Nairobi is one of the top ranked universities in Africa and the best in Kenya. Many people have been praising it for a long time for having adequate facilities for tertiary studies as well as the best infrastructure and student friendly environment. Photo: Courtesy
Despite being located in Kenya's capital city, this institution has for a long time provided cheap accommodation to its students due to the fact that majority of them come from poor families across the country. For a whole semester of 4 months and for the students staying in single rooms, they were required to pay Ksh 3,150 only and those in shared rooms paid Ksh 2,730. Unfortunately, the current university administration has revised the accommodation fee structure. This information has been received by shock as the institution made a huge increase in the semester fees. Students staying in the hostels and in their final year of study are now expected to pay Ksh 21,525 per semester. For the ones in shared rooms, they are supposed to pay Ksh 15,120. New students joining their first year of study are also required to pay a whooping Ksh 19,635. Here are some photos of the university hostels:
Many Kenyans have not been pleased at the rate in which universities are increasing school fees tremendously. This is a big blow to students who come from financially crippled backgrounds the the government should act swift and bar universities from taking advantage of vulnerable students.
