Over the past year Maasai Mara University has been on the spotlight due to serious allegations concerning Corruption and money for grades. This is yet another scenario which the University is in the news headlines after it's Vice Chancellor has just been demoted from his title due to his questionable Academic qualifications.
Mr. Kitche Onyango Magak was recently appointed to be the acting Vice Chancellor of the institution after Professor Mary Walingo stepped down in order to pave way for investigations into the corruption scandal. It is known that the acting VC got his PhD from Washington International University. Unfortunately, the University is not recognized by Commission for University Education (CUE).
An investigation into the legitimacy of the VC's papers came into light after a team from the university wrote to the Cabinet Secretary of Education Prof. George Magoha, stating their concerns about the VC. In their letter they stated, " The University has not sought educational accreditation and does not have a campus. As recently as October 2012, the Oregon Office of Degree Authorization stated on its own website that WIU is located in the British Virgin Islands and its degree is not recognized. As a centre that is mandated to combat cheating, plagiarism, academic dishonesty and champion for integrity, we therefore urge you to take necessary action."
The case is now been investigated by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission and the DCI. The demoted VC is replaced by Professor Joseph Chacha.
