Two students from Michuki Technical Training Institute in Murang'a county were drowned in River Mathioya on Sunday evening during a nature walk to a local waterfall around the school. According to Iyego residents, the two were part of the group of friends that hiked to the Karuuya waterfall one day after merrymaking.
One female student who is yet to be identified is said to have slipped while attempting to take a photo and uncertainly plunged into the raging water of River Mathioya. Another male student jumped into the river in an attempt to save the girl but unfortunately, he was swept away by fast moving water, according to witnesses who were around.
Efforts to rescue the two students were unsuccessful on Sunday evening and the retrieval of their bodies is expected to resume on Monday.
