All government sponsored students both in public and private universities across the country will now dig deeper in to their pockets after the parliamentary committee on Education okayed fee increment from the current Ksh 16,000 to Ksh 48,000.
According to a report by the Standard, the proposal done by the institution of higher learning was agreed on claims that the Ksh 16,000 have never been adjusted ever since 1989 despite the increase in cost of running the institutions since then.
The National Assembly Committee on Education yesterday's meeting chaired by Florence and attended by educational stakeholders, the treasury as well as vice chancellors stated there was need to consider increasing the tuition fee.
They however alleged that plans have been made to increase the HELB allocation although the allocation will not be consider now due to the hard economic times imposed y the coronavirus pandemic.
The National Treasury Permanent Secretary Mr. Julius Muia told vice chancellors to come up with different ways to raise funds in running their institutions since the government was financially constrained.
