The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has announced that registration for the 2023 teacher education examinations has begun and will end on Friday, January 20th. In a statement released on Friday, January 13th, KNEC provided a list of the examinations that interested teachers can register for in the academic year 2023. These teacher education examinations are professional exams for those wishing to join the teaching profession at various levels.
"Additionally, candidates who were referred to the Primary Education (PTE) examination, which has been phased out, shall be allowed to re-sit the papers referred for the last time in March/April 2023. After that, KNEC shall not offer the PTE examination," KNEC added.
Some of the exams include the Upgrade Diploma in Primary Education (UDPTE), Upgrade Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (UDECTE), Certificate in Primary Teacher Education (PTE) for candidates referred in previous years, and a Teacher Certificate for Adult Education (TCAE). Others include the Diploma in Teacher Education (DTE), Diploma in Special Education, and Diploma and Certificate in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE).
The ECDE examinations are courses taken by students who wish to specialize in Early Childhood Education. The PTE is a two-year course taken by students who wish to be teachers at the Primary School level after they complete the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination. All those who pursue the course are awarded a certificate in Primary Teacher Education. The TCAE examination, on the other hand, is a two-year course taken by students who wish to be teachers at an adult education center after they complete the KCSE examination.
KNEC has urged all interested teachers to register before the deadline of January 20th. The TCAE exam is administered to eligible candidates within Kenya by the Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education in the Ministry of Education on behalf of KNEC.
This announcement comes as the Kenyan government continues to invest in the education sector and focuses on improving the quality of teachers in the country. By offering these professional examinations, KNEC is providing an opportunity for individuals to join the teaching profession and contribute to the development of education in Kenya.
