Students of Meru University of Science and Technology have staged a demonstration following the terminal leave issued to their Vice Chancellor Romanus Odhiambo.
The protest was accompanied by bonfires along the Meru-Mau road where a car was set on fire.
Students claimed that, Professor Odhiambo had raised the academic standards, good management and infrastructure of the university. They blocked the road and claimed his reinstatement as far as council is concerned.
Odhiambo's contract was to expire on July this year, but unfortunately the council declined to renew it claiming underperformance and mismanagement. He was also accused by the council of failing to implement recommendation from an audit report which revealed financial irregularities and misappropriation of funds in the university following the council's meeting which was held on 27th February 2023.
Charity Gichuki has been appointed by the council as an acting Vice Chancellor who has been serving as deputy Vice Chancellor of Odhiambo.
