Why schools may not be opened for the rest of 2021

It is an undisputable fact that Covid-19 has brought the entire world to its knees. There have been massive job losses, business colapse, rise in crime rates and even halting of physical learning globally.

President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta first ordered the closure of schools last year in March when the first case was reported in Kenya and the decision was only reversed in October when candidates were allowed to resume face to face learning.

Kenya is currently on its third wave of Covid-19 infections and this is regarded as being the deadliest wave in kenya with high infection rates, high number of new infections and high mortality rate.

The president in mitigation has imposed stringent measures including the lockdown of five counties viewed as the disease hot-spot zones, halting movement into and out of the areas under lockdown as well as the indefinite suspension of physical learning in all learning institutions with exception to candidates sitting for their final exams and medical school students.

The president in his speech given on 1st April 2021 stated that he is pained by the suffering of the common mwananchi but the measures are for their own good and that he will lift the restrictions if the covid-19 curve is flattened.

This may take a long period of time to achieve as people have been observed not to wear face masks, maintain social distancing and obey other rules laid down by the Ministry of health.

The Cabinet secretary in charge of Education Prof. George Magoha has been known to be uncompromising on matters concerning students' safety and health emphasizing that the lives of learners is of utmost importance over and over again.

So unless the Covid-19 infections curve is flattened and citizens strictly adhere to the Ministry of health guidelines on Covid-19 prevention and management, then we should prepare for a long year of no physical learning the whole of this year.

Let's adhere to the Ministry of health guidelines so that we flatten the covid-19 infections curve and thus allow the president to lift the restrictions and allow students back to school.
