Competency- Based Curriculum (CBC) is not a new trend, but has received much attention over the past few years as more institutions develop programs. CBC has gained popularity with learners due to its flexible structure and affordability. As the name suggests, these programs are based on development of competencies applicable to a particular career.
CBC is where learning is based on the needs and potential of individual learners under a flexible framework and parameters that move and shift according to the learners demands .It is a curriculum that emphasizes the complex outcomes of a learning process (knowledge, skills and attitudes to be applied by learners) rather than mainly focusing on what learners are expected to learn about in terms of traditionally-defined subject content.
One of the key benefits of CBC is that learning centers on real -world skills and competency development.Programs are designed around competencies that are needed for a particular career ensuring that the material is relevant. The outcome is that students are workplace ready and have expertise in their chosen fields.
The vision of CBC is to enable every Kenyan to become an engaged, empowered, ethical citizen. This is achieved by providing skills and knowledge to every Kenyan student that they need, to thrive.
