Improved Education in Kenya due to Introduction of CBC Mode of Learning-Opinion

The Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) was rolled out in schools throughout the Country in the year 2017. It was designed by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development to replace the 8-4-4 system of education. The system has been under a lot of criticism with Kenyans taking their grievances to social media to highlight the challenges they are facing with the system of education.

This caused a section of lawyers petition the system. The Petition noted that the system of education shrouded in confusion and the Government failed to involve and consult stakeholders before rolling out the program. The petition further states that the education system imposes heavy financial burden on parents on procuring books and learning materials without due regard to the harsh economic times. People noted that the system widened the gap between the poor and the rich in the country.

However the system has notable advantages and improvements as compared to the previous system of education. It is meant to emphasize the significance of development skills, knowledge and also apply this competencies in real life situations. The Competency Based Curriculum replaced the 8-4-4 system of education which was more of a teacher based system, as compared to CBC which is a student based system and gives more focus on a students self learn and their skills. The system has seen a lot of parent involvement where children do their assignments with the assistance of parents. It acknowledges that not all students are gifted academically and eases pressure on performance.

It aims at teaching learners seven competencies such as Communication, Collaboration, Critical thinking and Problem solving, Imagination and Creativity, Citizenship, Learning and learn, Self Efficiency and digital literacy.

It focuses on the importance of a learners ability to develop skills and knowledge and apply those Competency skills to solve daily life challenges. The system incorporates both classroom and curriculum activities making learning more fun and ensuring that the learners ability is tested all round.
