Opinion: Why Schools May Not Reopen as Scheduled

President Uhuru Kenyatta suspended all physical learning in all learning institutions in the country, due to the increase of the number of cases of corona virus. Following reports, the rate at which the virus was spreading had risen to higher levels, which brought everyone to attention on how we shall contain the problem.

Reasons as to why the schools may not reopen as scheduled is that, the education ministry in allies with the health ministry, targeted to vaccinate all teachers but as per now, approximately 50% of teachers have been vaccinated. Therefore, all teachers will have to be vaccinated before reopening so that to reduce the rate at which the virus is spreading.

Another reason is that, some counties such as Nakuru, Nairobi among many others are still locked with an aim of preventing more spread. Therefore, for schools to reopen, all counties should be lockdown free as there are learners who school in the locked counties.

Following the current trend towards reopening, open directives have not been issued yet from the cabinet secretary.
