Government to rehire retired teachers

The government is set to rehire retired teachers back to class. This follows a Treasury recommendation due to the high number of public servants who are retiring and it is becoming difficult to provide for their pension. The government allocated Ksh 153 billion in the current financial period to cater for pensions.

A new bill (The Geriatric Bill, 2021) is set to be approved by mps to allow for rehiring of older members society. It also seeks to pave the way for the hiring of retirees on scaled hours to work in any other area as may be determined by the Public Service Cabinet Secretary.

The Cabinet Secretary for Public Service will consult the National Council for Older Members of Society, State agencies and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission to make regulation for voluntary or non-voluntary post-retirement employment of older members of society. This will apply in the following critical areas-health, national security, education and any other service areas as may be determined by the Cabinet Secretary.
