TSC Issues New Directive To Retrain All Teachers

According to a new directive by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) all public school teachers will be required to renew their professional certificates at select institutions after every five years.

TSC CEO Nancy Macharia stated during the launch of the Teacher Professional Development Program on September 22 that all 340,000 employees will enroll in the new courses.

The professional training is divided into six modules, each of which lasts five years. In addition, all teachers would be charged Ksh6,000 each module.

In order to implement the training, four universities have been hired on a yearly basis.

Kenyatta University, Riara University, Mount Kenya University, and Kenya Education Management Institute are among these institutions.

The goal, according to the TSC chief, is to guarantee that the teaching profession follows in the footsteps of other prestigious professions such as law and engineering in terms of staying current with professional trends.

Negotiating for teachers had become a difficult process over the years, she said, because tutors were typically grouped together depending on their areas of specialization. Macharia stated that the teaching profession will gain respect as a result of the new training program.

The announcement comes after TSC suggested eliminating the Bachelor of Education degree as a prerequisite for employment.

Teachers would instead complete a three-year Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree and then enroll in a one-year postgraduate study to get a TSC number.

"In order to professionalise the teaching service and improve the quality of education, the commission needs to review entry grades to the teaching service and advise the national government.

"This will raise the standards of the teaching profession and attract more quality grades," TSC Quality Assurance Director Reuben Nthamburi stated.
