The School Reopening Dilemma

The School Reopening Dilemma

The Covid 19 pandemic has affected the education sector in Kenya. In 2020 March when the Corona Virus reached Kenya, schools had to be closed until 2021 January. However, 2021 seems to be no different with the education sector being affected.

The president ordered a new directive on schools closing and this led to all higher institutions being closed leaving students who are taking medical courses in school.

In the previous speech of Magoha when releasing the KCPE exams, Magoha reiterated that the schools will still reopen as normal and that the education calendar will not be affected. However, the president has suspended all learning activities and it is therefore uncertain whether the students will reopen schools in May as rescheduled or whether the students will still stay at home.

The lock down that has been imposed on the five counties has limited movement and students will not be able to move to their respective schools especially those who have to travel out of the zoned area. Therefore, it is not yet sure if the president will reopen the counties to allow movement of students and school reopening or whether the schools will be completely shut.
