There are more than 50 universities and colleges in Kenya, 33 of them are public universities and over 30 of these universities are private instructions.

1.University of Nairobi

Occupying number one is the University of Nairobi which is currently ranked the best university in Kenya.

The University of Nairobi was established by an act of parliament CAP 210 of the laws of Kenya. It is the pioneer institution if university education in Kenya and the region.

It is the only institution of higher learning for a long time . The university of Nairobi responded to the national regional and Africa's high level man power training needs by developing and evolving strong diversified academic program and specializations in science, applied sciences technology humanities, social sciences and the arts.

Even though the history of this educational institution dates back to the 1956, it has become an independent university only in the 1970 according Wikipedia. Exactly in 1970, it was decided by the government to split the well known university of East Africa into three different universities that is Makerere university based in Uganda, the famous university of Dar es salaam based in Tanzania and of course the biggest Kenya university University of Nairobi.

2.Kenyatta University

Kenyatta University is ranked second in Kenya and 1983 in the world.

Kenyatta University was found in 1985 as a non profit public higher education institution located in the suburban setting in the metropolis in Nairobi.

3.Egerton University

Egerton is the oldest institution in Kenya r=that was established in 1984 which was founded as a farm school in 1939 by Lord Maurice Edgerton a British national settled in Kenya in 1920's.

Egerton University has two campuses main campus in Njoro and Nakuru town Campus college. The university has 10 faculties subdivided into 51 academic departments offering programs at Diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The main campus is located in Njoro a small community approximately 25 kilometers southwest of Nakuru Town.

4. Moi University

Moi university was established in 1984. It is a non profit public higher education institution. It is located in the suburban setting of the small city of Eldoret.

Moi university also have branches in Eldoret West Campus, Nairobi, Kericho, Kitale. The admission rate range is 80 to 90% making this as one of the Kenyan education organization a least selective institution. International applicants are eligible to apply for enrollment.

5. Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology

It is situated in Juja 36 kilometers North East of of Nairobi along Nairobi Thika Highway.

It was started in 1981 as a middle level college Jomo Kenyatta college of agriculture and technology by the government of Kenya with the general assistance from the Japanese Government. It offers courses in Technology, Engineering, science, commerce, management and building Sciences.

The university has a strong research interest in areas of biotechnology and engineering.

It is ranked among the most preferred university in Kenya. It has a library that has a sitting capacity of 600 students and UA stocked with 80,000 volumes. In 2010, Jomo Kenyatta university was selected as the host for the East and Central Africa Regional Institute of Pan Africa University.

6. Maseno University

It is a public university based in Maseno district of of the city of Kisumu situated along the equator.

Maseno university was fully fledged as a university in 2001 after being a constituent college of Moi university for a decade.

7. Technical University of Kenya

Technical university of Kenya was established through the elevation of Kenya Polytechnic university college to full university status.

TUK was established as the first technical university in Kenya with the provision of the proposed universities act oc 2012.

8. Strathmore university

Strathmore university is a chartered university based in Nairobi. It was started in 1961 as the first multiracial and multi religious.

In August 2002 the Commission of higher education awarded Strathmore a letter of interim authority as a university with a faculty of commerce and a faculty of information technology.

The first undergraduate students to enroll in these faculties completed their four year degree course in December 2004 and graduated in August 2005.

9. Masinde Muliro of Science and Technology

It is situated in Kakamega county in Western Kenya.

It was established in 2003 as Western University of college of science and technology as a constituent of Moi University hut later it was chartered in 2007.

Masinde Muliro university has a mandate of stimulating capacity building in science technology and innovation.

Masinde Muliro university excel in quality research ensuring that the research generated is converted to useful application in the society.
