University's Academic Staff Suspend Lecturer's Strike Set To Begin On Monday

Egerton University Academic Staff Union hazs declared that they will not participate in the nationwide lecturers strike that is set to begin on Monday 30th. Some of the union mambers said that they will first have to consider internal onflict affecting the institution before deciding to join the strike.

Egerton is one of the thirty five public universities in Keny whose management has not implemented the 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement. It is the failure of the agreement that led to the calls for the strike by the UASU top officials.

Egerton UASU members claim that the University's financial status is currently unstable, and deciding to join the strike would only worsen the situation. They said thy need the students to be around so that the lectures can get their allowances.

The Union's chairperson Prof. Ngare Kariuki said that if they join the national strike, then the university may be closed for a long period of time. This might eventually force the university management to reduce the lectures monthly salary by 40 per cent.

However, professor Ngare warned that if the issues they have agreed with the management are not met, then the union will have no choice but to join the national strike.
