When the Covid-19 crashed, schools were closed and the education calendar was disrupted. KCPE and KCSE students were unsure when to write their exams and some schools offered online classes to ensure they completed the syllabus on time.
Embakasi East Babu Owino committed to helping students and provided free Mathematics and Chemistry classes on social media. At first, the move drew a lot of criticism, with some blaming the legislature for trying to ‘clean up’ its name but this did not deter him.
He selected a few subjects that he found to be explored and investigated freely, well, this was to be expected as he had a degree in Actuarial Science. Classes, which used to be held on Fridays, recently attracted a lot of people and Babu took students through Chemistry, analyzing organic chemistry.
On Monday, KCSE candidate Robinson Simiyu acknowledged Babu's performance, saying he had gained a lot from the classes.
Although Murang’a High School had already released online classes for its students, Robinson said Babu’s Mathematics and Chemistry classes were helpful. “I would like to thank Babu Owino because he went ahead and started teaching.
“I remember his studies in Mathematics and Chemistry… were very helpful. Our school had online courses but there are students out there who do not have that right. I helped with the studies and I believe that many others have also benefited,” he said.
A few weeks ago, Babu went on social media boasting of his amazing degree certificates and tried to explain why he had been in school for so many years.
Certificates have shown that he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Actuarial Science at the University of Nairobi back in 2012 and earned first grade honors.
He later enrolled in the same university to obtain a Law degree and graduated with a second class, a higher degree by 2020.
