Mama Ngina University as it has been named will be open to admitting students in September this year according to Education Cabinet secretary Prof George Magoha. It is located in Gatundu South sub county, Kiambu county and is a constituent of the iconic Kenyatta University.
Magoha was speaking at Mutomo primary school when he announced the news.He praised the progress of the construction of the varsity which began in 2016 and is now complete. The institution will offer three programmes in Hospitality, Environmental Studies and Information Communication Technology.
"We have decide that come the new academic year in september, the university should have students. From what we have established, it is ready for new admissions. We hope it will get the required support from KU until it can stand on its own", Magoha said.
It is expected to enhance development in the area when its gets fully operational and boost its educational standards.Prof Magoha promised to fast track the preparedness of this novel institution and ensure its ready to receive students by september 2021.
Prof Paul Wainaina who is the Vice Chancellor of Kenyatta University said that Mama Ngina University will be under principal, and that Kenyatta University will manage it with a board of management via its academic programmes and examinations.
While noting that the college is more than ready to be gazetted, accredited and regularized ahead of its opening in september with full support from KU for about three years before it is a fully independent university.
Prof Wainaina however pointed out that students who will be admitted here in september will have to look for accommodation outside the institutions premises since it lacks enough manpower and infrastructure to accommodate students at the moment.
Netizens however have raised complains on why the university had to be be named Mama Ngina, after a family member of one of the greatest names in Kenyan history.Mama Ngina, the mother to the current Kenyan President, Hon Uhuru Kenyatta.Kenyatta University too was named after the Kenyatta family back in the day.
Netizens thought this should not have been the case. What is your take on this?
