The Kenya Pipeline Company Limited is a State Corporation that was established on 6th September, 1973 under the Companies Act (CAP 486) of the Laws of Kenya and started commercial operations in 1978. The Company is owned by the Government and complies with the provisions of the State Corporations Act (Cap 446) of 1986.
The company is under the management of CEO Dr. Macharia Irungu. It consists of a pipeline system currently consists of a network of 1,792 km of pipelines running from Mombasa through Nairobi to the Western Kenya towns of Nakuru, Eldoret and Kisumu. The common products transported are for energy purposes, which include natural gas, biofuels, and liquid petroleum.
This therefore means that the pipeline should be in constant management to avoid future disasters in Kenya. Robert Alai has expressed his dissatisfaction of how Kenya pipeline are handling the leak defections systems of the pipelines. He claims that there activities are being delayed and may result to a disaster as advised by experts.
Taking to his twitter account he has said:
"Kenya pipeline was advised by consultant that the old pipeline is disaster waiting to happen. They were informed to contract a company to install leak detection system. CEO has been advertising and cancelling the advert hoping to buy time for his company to qualify."
Among the tenders was that of design, supply, installation, configuration, testing and commissioning of leak detection system.
