Central organization of Trade unions of Kenya COTU leader Hon Francis Atwori has declared that companies and other organizations should recognize their agents as their employees. This is because it is the agents who are bringing the lionshare of the profits accrued by these companies.
Such companies include Safaricom and Uber who do business through private agents who they label as self employed. Cotu has also demanded that the companies should allows their current workers to be unionized so that they may enjoy the benefits that accrue under Labour Relations.
The union said that it is in the process of moving to court to get such companies to reclassify their Kenyan agents as workers. This comes at the backdrop of the Uber drivers in the UK winning a case which had made Uber company reclassify about 70,000 UK Uber drivers as workers, making them entitled to a minimum wage of about Sh1,300 per every hour of trips made.
Currently, Safaricom has registered a drop in profits accrued from calling airtime. This means she depends alot on Mpesa Agents to give out profits. Atwoli wants agents to be given a status and some stipends.
