China's Response After Allegations That It Is Overburdening Kenya With Loans

China has made Kenya's debts to the Asian economic powerhouse clear. Through his remarks, Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Zhou Pingjian revealed that Kenya owes China only 10% of its total debt.

During his speech, the envoy argued that the circulating reports accusing China of credit overloading the country were untrue and the information was basically aimed at misleading Kenyans. According to him, other western nations are Kenya's main creditors.

The ambassador also noted that China lends to Kenya and other African countries in accordance with normal business practices and respects the country's sovereignty. He added that China only offers aid when it is needed and when African leaders, including Kenyan government leaders, turn to them.

Furthermore, China does not impose any political conditions on the debt deal and has never forced any African country to obtain loans and has never pressured any African country to repay the debt.

He also clarified that not a single country ran into debt problems or was forced to pledge its ports, mines or other strategic resources to China just because it cooperates financially with China  infrastructure in Kenya and respects the country very much.
