New Dawn For Turkana as Multi-billion Infrastructure Project Linking South Sudan Takes Shape

The newly constructed Kawalase bridge

A promising turning point for residents of Turkana County who have decried exclusion and marginalization by the national government since independence has finally come to be witnessed after the sh 38 billion road project cutting through the county to the South Sudan border brought the much-needed gains.

As of today, the infamous Kawalase bridge lying along the 338 km road stretching from Lokichar to Nakodok near South Sudan is done, offering reliable connectivity to the far North while at the same time reinforcing security along the bridge where bandits have been having a field day in the past years.

The marauding bandits would ambush travellers on the bridge where the road was in bad condition, taking advantage of the slow-moving vehicles.

The notorious river has also been making headlines at least every year for washing away motorists and passengers due to over flooding which would also result to traffic snarl ups, extending for several days as water was being given time to subside and the damaged bridge repaired.

Due to the perennial casualties in the river, it was even nicknamed 'river of death', but now that will be I thing of the past since the new bridge is up to standards and can withstand overflows without interrupting transportation along the corridor.

According to locals, the nearly done bridge and tarmacked road will really help in addressing insecurity since the time that will be taken by security officers to respond to emergencies will really be reduced.

Alongside the project which is being undertaken through the Kenya national highways authority, a fibre-optic cable has also been laid along the Eldoret-Lokichar-Nakodok national trunk road to improve communication.
