Uhuru Commissions First Microprocessor Manufacturing Plant In Africa

President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta this afternoon commissioned a Semi-Conductor Technologies Factory at the Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, in Nyeri County. The facility is the first of its kind in the African continent.

It's one among many Public Private Partnerships involving the government and private developers. The project will be run by Dedan Kinathi University in conjunction with American firm 4Wave Incorporated.

The factory is set to manufacture nanotechnology products such as integrated circuits and sensors which are the chief component in electronic gadgets.

During the ceremony Uhuru said, "This is the first step and we'll soon be manufacturing our own motherboards to help in the production of TVs and other electronic components."

The president also revealed that the government will soon commission ship-building plants in Mombasa and Kisumu.

"We are in the process of getting back to where we belong in industrial development", said Uhuru.

The president thanked the family of 4Wave engineers and the youth of Kenya for taking up the challenge to be part of the ambitious milestone project in Africa.

Last month, the president commissioned a Shs 4 billion gun manufacturing plant in Ruiru, Kiambu County.
