Shortage of rice in Mwea is looming as low water levels hit the giant Mwea irrigation scheme

An Acute shortage of rice is looming in mwea as water levels hit the giant mwea irrigation scheme in Kirinyaga County.


According to water user association chairman Morris Mutugi water level thiba and nyamindi which supply water to the scheme are drying up.


Security team in Kirinyaga County yesterday held a marathon meeting where they agreed to ration water in the giant rice scheme.' We agreed to do water rationing from the Gichugu constituency to ensure mwea rice farmers get water for farming and drinking.' Mutugi said.


Mutugi said water shortage in mwea rice scheme is common every year and the problem will be history if ksh 20 billion thiba dam is completed.


Interior principal secretary Dr Karanja Kibicho on 13 th august has assured Kirinyaga County residents that construction of ksh 20 million thiba dam will be completed by 28 th August 2021 saying once the dam is completed will enable expansion of the area under irrigation


"Farmers in Mwea irrigation scheme will also be able to farm two seasons in a year compared to one season currently " Kibicho said
