President Uhuru Issues a 90 Day Deadline to Reduce Cost of Tokens Electricity

The government has finally moved in to solve the existing challenge in the cost of electricity in the country.

Through a task force personally selected by the office of the president, the government will look into the country’s power purchase Agreements verses the independent power producers.

In addition, the DCI has been called upon to investigate into the alarming system losses within the Kenya Power company.

President Uhuru’s taskforce is being led by John Ngumi who called for a review and renegotiation of existing power deals.

According to the presidency, cutting of expensive power producers will see a unit of electricity go for Sh16 starting December 31 from Sh24 which is two-thirds of the current tariff.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has issued a 90 days deadline on bringing down the cost of power by up to 34 per cent.

This means a consumer who buys tokens worth Sh500 per month on electricity will now pay Sh330, saving Sh170.
