Chichwa Market was a project of the County Government of Kisumu. It is meant to serve those traders who were selling along the streets and were forced out of the streets as one way of reorganizing and beautifying Kisumu town.
The market was officially launched by the able Kisumu County Governor, professor Anyang' Nyong'o late last year. During the launch there was a big crowd of traders struggling to secure stalls in this market. The market is strategically located behind OD MIKAI in Kisumu spots ground.
In my opinion, since its launch, the market has not been able to pick up well despite its strategic location. A number of stalls are still not fully occupied, some stalls are still under stocked. What is really happening to this market? Or could it be that the Corona Virus - 2019 Disease affect some traders to an extent that they are still not yet able to resume business?
What worries me most about this market is the ongoing trend of some business people getting out of their to stalls to sell their goods along the streets especially in the evening. Are buyers really aware of this market?
