Big Win For Meru County Government As It Emerges Front Runner In Energy Sustainability

Meru County is among three finalist contenders who are competing for the opportunity to host the pilot Sustainable Energy Technical Assistance Project (SETA).

Meru emerged as a front runner due to the county government’s efforts in promoting sustainable energy especially in the department of Water where over 200 solar powered boreholes have been sunk across the county. The county government has also installed solar powered lighting in various markets and towns.

The project which is backed by the European Union is aimed at providing support to stakeholders of the Kenyan energy sector in the identification, planning and implementation of renewable energy, energy access and energy efficiency projects.

A delegation led by SETA Senior Energy Planner and Economist Jean Paul Laude and Dan Marangu from the Ministry of Energy paid a courtesy call to Meru Deputy Governor Titus Ntuchiu and Roads, Transport and Energy CEC Julius Taitumu. They sought to understand the energy projects and programmes that have been undertaken in the last four years as well as the partnerships that have been put in place to support county energy planning and development.

If successful, Meru County will receive a SETA demonstration centre where other counties will visit for benchmarking on the sustainable energy delivery model.
