On May 19, 2021, KRA destroyed alcohol and cigarettes worth over 1 billion at ECCL Facility in Stoni Athi River, Kajiado county, recovered after the multi-agency team from traders around the city raided Nairobi and was commissioned by Rispah Simiyu, the Commissioner of KRA Domestic Tax after noting that illicit goods were being distributed and supplied in the city. This came after KRA discovered also fake excise stamps being circulated which were later confiscated and destroyed.
These sales and distribution of illicit goods contravened the regulations set under the Excise Duty Act, which could have cost KRA Kshs 400,000,000/- in taxes. The goods were; 379,760 alcoholic spirits bottles, 60 raw spirit drums, 35,615 beer bottles, 11,000 wine bottles, and 197,000 cigarettes packets. The team that performed the raid was done by NEMA, NACADA, Interior Ministry, Public Health, and KEBS. This came after KRA introduced a door-to-door Nairobi businesses crackdown which targeted permit renewals among other cases, this came to be after KRA was appointed as the principal revenue collector for Nairobi County.
