Before he left Kenya under unclear circumstances in 2019, millionaire businessman Calvin Burgess accused Ruth Odinga of forcefully taking hundreds of tonnes of rice from his Dominion Farms and refusing to pay for it, ostensibly because she is an Odinga.
Prior to this, Burgess had told a television interviewer that his operations were compromised by politicians regularly demanding hefty sums as 'protection money'. Although the Canadian-born millionaire did not divulge names it was easy to tell who the culprits might be merely by association.
Today another investor is struggling to revive the robust rice farming activities that were started and then abandoned by Calvin Burgess within the Yala Swamp ecosystem.
When Dominion Farms was up and running some 3000 locals were directly employed by the company not to mention thousands more who benefited indirectly. Ruth Odinga went on to serve as a rebel deputy governor under Jack Ranguma in Kisumu.
Currently, she holds some post as an Executive in the Kisumu County Government.
Why bring up all this? Is nepotism peculiar to the Odinga's?
No. Fairly all people in notable positions would stretch out a helping hand to their kin; it's natural.
What may cost the Orange Democratic Movement Party however is to have an Odinga, Jaoko Oburu contest in the Langata Constituency race on the party ticket.
Locals incited by politicians to picket at Dominion Farms.
Jaoko Oburu is a young man with his life ahead of him. He is not popular as a politician. His performance as the Minister for Works in the Siaya County Government has been lackluster. If he vies and Jalan'go vies both are likely to divide votes and lose to the incumbent, Nixon Korir.
Perhaps this is the only time that all Odinga's could put a hold on the sideshows and allow the nation to concentrate on elevating only one Raila Amollo Odinga's candidacy.
