BBI Ruling: Fresh Details Reveal Huge Amount of Money That Was Allegedly Spent in the BBI Process

The defeat of the Building Bridges Initiative report (BBI) yesterday is a major blow to the taxpayer, as the government spent billions of shillings when promoting it.

It is estimated that to date, about Sh10 billion has been spent on all activities related to the program and it's whole promotion process.

The amount was allegedly spent right after a panel was appointed in January 2020 by President Kenyatta after consultation with ODM leader Mr Raila Odinga.

The panel members were Bishop Levi Imathiu, Senator Maison Leshomo, Mr James Matundura and Ms Rose Moseu.

Others are Senator Agnes Kavindu (Machakos), Mr Saeed Mwaguni, Bishop Peter Njenga, Bishop Zaccheaus Okoth, Dr Adams Oloo, Senator Amos Wako (Busia), Mrs Florence Omose, Mr Morompi ole Ronkei and Major John Seii.

In addition to the members, the panel also included clerks who recorded and transcribed the proposals submitted by various groups to forums organized across the country.

However, former panel members, lawyer Paul Mwangi and Ambassador Martin Kimani, dismissed the allegations, saying the money allocated to them did not reach that level.

"It is true that we were allocated money but the amount mentioned has been exaggerated," said Mr Kimani.

President Kenyatta has also been widely criticized for instructing the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to turn loans given to MCAs to buy cars into subsidies.

Members of County Assembly were given a total of Sh4 billion across the country as car loans.
