The conference which is set to be held in Makueni county in August this year is expected to bring together the 47 counties across the country.
Speaking while kicking off the tree planting exercise at Kamunyolo dam in Makueni County, Governor Kivutha Kibwana has noted that president Uhuru Kenyatta is set to plant the last tree that will hit the 2 million mark.
"We are expected to plant 2 million trees before the conference kicks off, the president will plant the last tree to hit the 2 million mark," Kibwana noted.
The 7th annual devolution conference is set to kick off on the 23rd of August this year with Makueni county being the host.
The conference which was set to be held last year was postponed with everything set following the outbreak of Covid-19 in the country.
Kibwana has either noted that the main aim of planting the 2 million trees is to conserve the environment and fight climate change in the country.
He has also called on other counties to emulate the same in a bid to safe the country from the effects of climate change.
On her side, the Micro Enterprise Support Program Trust (MESPT) programs manager, the organization partnering with the county government to achieve the mark, Doreen Kinoti has said that they will continue partnering with more counties in tree planting.
MESPT is partnering with Makueni county through Danida to plant trees in a bid to conserve the environment and also achieve growth in health, farming, business and development.
"We have supported various initiatives that include, irrigation systems, we will continue to do that, this program is funded by Danida and we are looking at 12 counties with Makueni being one of the counties," Doreen narrated.
MESPT has committed to donate 6,000 trees to Makueni County in the ongoing tree planting exercise.
