Check Out The Largest Dam In Kenya Where Electricity Is Produced

Masinga dam is the largest dam in Kenya. It straddles the Embu and Machakos county boaders.The construction of the dam began in 1978 and it was completed in 1981.The cost of constructing this gigantic dam was 172 million dollars.

This dam is owned by the Tana and Arthi rivers development authority(TARDA).Masinga is a 60m tall and 2200m long embarkment dam.The dam has a spill was and a bottom outlet that allows excess water to flow out.At full reservoir capacity, the dam has a surface area of 120km² and 156million m³.The Masinga large volume is crucial in regulating water to four other hydroelectric power plants downstream.

The power plant in this dam is controlled by Kenya Electricity Generating Company.The plant has a nameplate capacity of 40MW.It has 2 Kaplan turbines each of 20MW.These turbines were provided by Echser Wyss.

The maximum hydraulic head is 49m and the maximum flow per turbine is 45.9m³/s.
