A day after small-scale traders operating from various markets in Nairobi city staging demonstrations within the city CBD over the opening of China Square Supermarket and what they claimed Chinese nationals "invading" their sector, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has met them.

In an update delivered in the afternoon of today on March 1st 2023, DP Rigathi Gachagua in the company of other relevant state officials met the traders' representatives at his Harambee Annex office where the traders had that yesterday briefly demonstrated from while seeking his attention.

The meeting which happened just like how it had been scheduled offered the traders a chance to bring to the DP's or rather Government's attention among other things their challenges and impediments to their businesses.

From the update by the DP, it was of great magnitude as it was also attended by Interior CS Prof Kithure Kindiki, Dr Alfred Mutua CS Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa, Trade Principal Secretary Alfred K’Ombudon and his counterparts Abubakar Hassan Abubakar of Investment and Julius Korir of Cabinet Affairs.

From the meeting, the DP said that "we have agreed on a three-week timeline to exhaustively consider the issues raised for comprehensive interventions."

He did not give a hint of what those interventions could be or if they'll mean closing of China Square Supermarket but we'll definitely witness them in the course of the month and near future and as the issues will be tackled.

Others state officials present during that meeting were the Kenya Revenue Authority Board Chairman Anthony Mwaura, Acting KRA Commissioner-General Rispah Simiyu, Kenya Bureau of Standards Managing Director Bernard Njiraini, Director of Immigration Alexander Muteshi, Anti-Counterfeit Authority Executive Director Dr Robi Mbugua and other heads of respective agencies.
