Why the Economic Sector at the Coastal Region Has Plummeted

Thw Coastal region of Kenya, known for its eye-catching and serene sorrounding has been faced with a hudle of economic backslide following the decline on the tourism industry.

Today in a fuction held at the the Coastal Region,Owen Baya stated that the tourism sector, which was a stronghold for economic growth in regions like Malindi has been affected a lot, leading to decline of economy in the areas affected. He added that not only is international tourism affected but also domestic tourism following the Covid-19 disease.International tourists dare not come to the country based on their reason that they will only do so unless the area becomes a 'clean and safe zone' .He mentioned Zanzibar claiming that their step is to ensure those working in the tourist sector and in other businesses get vaccinated first to ease the tension of being infected by the Covid disease. With Kenya being the exception,Mauritius,Egypt and Zanzibar have been acknowledged as 'safe zones' for tourism.Kenya has now been filtered out as not among the tourist zones in the market strategy.

The Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi backed him up noting thet Kenya is now a red zone.

Paralyzing the tourist sector has not only affected the economy of the country but has also largely affected the lives of many people residing at the Coast, since their source of livelihoods has been interfered with negatively. He added that most hotels have closed while the few that are still open only receive little number of customers. The number of hotel attendants too has also reduced from like 100 to 5,this he added.

His stand was that they should figure out as Coastal people on how to handle the issue with Covid-19 because it is no longer a health issue,it has become an economic issue. He requested the government to look into the matter and ensure they are well taken care of so that people can get back on their feet once again, and the first step being to carry out vaccination for residents there.
