Meet One Of The Richest Agricultural Counties In Kenya (Photos).

Uasin Gishu County.

Uasin Gishu County is one of the 47 counties in Kenya. It is located on a plateau within the former Rift-Valley province. The county boarders Nandi County to the south and Elgeyo-Marakwet County to the east. It has a total area of approximately 2955 kilometers. The headquarter of Uasin Gishu County is Eldoret town.

The county has a cool and temperate climate suitable for growing crops and keeping different types of livestock. Besides favourable climatic conditions, Uasin Gishu County has very fertile agricultural soils. The main type of soils found in this county include; red loam soils, brown clay soils, red clay soils and brown clay soils.

Agricultural activities is what makes Uasin Gishu County to be taken as one of the richest counties in Kenya. Agriculture is the main mainstay contributing about 85 percent of total rural household income in the county.

Both cash crops and food crops are grown in this county. Tea, wheat, maize and maize are the main crops grown in this county. Livestock kept in Uasin Gishu County are mainly dairy cattles.

1. Tea.

Tea is majorly grown in areas near Nandi County and Elgeyo-Marakwet County. It is grown for commercial purpose. Tea farming creates employment opportunities to many youths in this county.

2. Wheat.

Wheat is widely grown in Uasin Gishu County. It is grown by both small scale and large scale farmers. It is used as human and animal food. Wheat farming contributes a large percentage of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of Uasin Gishu County.

3. Maize.

Maize as we know is the staple food of Kenyans therefore, it must be produced in large quantities. Uasin Gishu County is ranked the top supplier of both green and dry maize in Kenya. In Uasin Gishu County, maize is grown both in open fields and under greenhouses. Dry maize are sold to other counties and some are transported to Unga Limited Industry in Eldoret for milling.

4. Dairy Cattles.

They are purposely kept for milk production. Dairy cattles are kept in large scale by farmers in Uasin Gishu County. Most of the milk are taken to Brookside Milk Processing Industry located in Mioben, Eldoret for processing to get ghee and yoghurt.

5. Poultry Farming.

Both broiler and layer chickens are kept in Uasin Gishu County. They are mainly kept in large scale to supply meat and eggs. Most of the eggs produced are sold in Eldoret town and Kisumu city.
