Rice importation has been protested by the residents of mount Kenya in kirinyanga county that move was directed by the president Ruto during the Jamhuri day celebration that government had planned to import maize and rice to fill the gap the country is experiencing in terms of food shortage.
The Mwea rice farmers oppose importation of rice, since the farmers say they have over 400,000 tonnes of rice in store which are urging the government to buy it from them because the spent alot of money farming it.
The Importation that is intended to take place come next year from February 2023, it's said to a duty free, making it cheaper for the millers to consider it since it will be cheaper compared to the locally produced one.
The high cost of production of local food stuffs was due to the price of fertilizer and the shortage of rainfall. The same cry was heard from maize Farmers who had the same feeling and even other considered abandoning the type of farming to a different one, for the fear of not getting profit or no market at all.
Should the government consider their plea and support the local farmers?
