Details Emerge on the Origin of Ship That Docked in Mombasa

KPA set to showcase itself at Mombasa ASK show

It has been established that the vessel that allegedly docked at the Mombasa port sailed from the port of Maputo, Mozambique.

Roy Mugiira, CEO of the National Biosafety Authority, acknowledged that the ship is bringing in white maize purchased by the World Food Programme (WFP) for reasons of emergency food relief in an interview with Citizen TV's Jeff Koinange Live.

"This is not a trading commodity and it is not GMO. We have verified, we have a certificate of GMO-free cargo that has come through. Any process that will bring in GMO maize will require our approval," Mugiira commented.

Public discussion was aroused by the arrival of the ship as some MPs threatened to remove Trade CS Moses Kuria from office if he went ahead and approved the discharge of the grain without Parliament's sanction.

David Pkosing, a member of parliament for Pokot South, asserted on Tuesday that CS Kuria lacked the power to mandate the importation of maize without first consulting the general public and other parties.
