The General Manager Finance at Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has been arrested alongside his wife Jacinta Wanjiku Wambugu by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission officials in Mombasa. The officers in the EACC had just concluded an investigation citing irregular transfer of funds between the two amounting to Ksh.214,548, 340.80.
Investigators also arrested another person by the name Isaac Obunga, a clerical officer at KPA. Mr. Nyoike is said to have allegedly used the power of his office to confer the funds to Nyali Capital Limited, according to the preliminary investigating reports by the EACC officers.
Nyali Capital Limited is said to be a family business as it is run by Mr. Nyoike’s relatives. The directors of the company include Alfred Hinga Nyoike (brother to Patrick Nyoike) and one Peter Ndichu Kinyanjui. Jacinta Wanjiku Wambugu is the company’s General Manager.
The Director of Public Prosecutions has confirmed the arrest and the charges levied against the arrested persons through a press statement to newsrooms. “Indeed, Patrick Wambugu Nyoike facilitated Nyali Capital Limited’s micro finance business to finance the KPA suppliers, Local Purchase Order (LPOs) and Local Service Orders (LSOs) and thereafter used the KPA system to have the principal and the interest from the said suppliers remitted to Nyali Capital Limited’s account by the KPA. This clearly demonstrates a conflict of interest on the part of Patrick Wambugu Nyoike, the General Manager Finance at KPA ,” part of the statement read.
The three will be arraigned at the Anti- Corruption Magistrate’s Court in Mombasa on Monday to face the charges of conspiracy to commit an offense of corruption, office abuse and handling suspect property.
