One of Kenya's telecommunications firms, Safaricom, has updated its instructions for all of its clients who live near Kenyan borders.
The mobile network provider today warned all users to exercise extreme caution before sending any money over M-PESA via its verified Twitter page account.
In an effort to prevent transferring money to the wrong person, Safaricom has instructed its customers to always verify the recipient's phone number before sending money to that person.
Safaricom has also warned the vast majority of its customers about an increasing number of con artists and fraudsters who are impersonating loved ones on WhatsApp in order to solicit money from them.
"Con artists create false WhatsApp accounts for your loved ones in order to request payment. Before sending any money, check with your friends and relatives to confirm their regular phone numbers. Send SMS 333 to report phony WhatsApp profiles, according to Safaricom.
