Relief as Safaricom to hide M-pesa users identity

Safaricom telecommunications company said that they are planning to start blocking customers contacts and it her details when they use lipa ma M-pesa services. This move, the Telecommunications giant say, is geared towards curbing personal information of customers landing on wrong hands of fraudsters.

Starting July this year, Safaricom will only display the first name of the customer and a few digits of the phone number, effectively hiding the identity of the customer. This move comes weeks after a survey by consultancy Ernst and Young (EY) showed that fourty one percent of the Telecommunications firms transferred client data to third party services providers. This is why at times, you received promotional messages from betting and other companies you didn't subscribe for.

This violates the Kenyan law which restricts handling and sharing of personal information of clients by the data firms and government entities. Individuals who go against this can be fined three million Kenya Shillings or ten years in jail.
