Teens also use social media for entertainment and self-expression. More importantly the platforms exposes them to the current events, allow them to interact across geographic barriers and teach them about a variety of subjects, including healthy behaviours. Social media that is humourous provides a social network that might even help teens avoid depression.

Sadly, social media use can also negatively affect teens, distracting them, disrupting their sleep, exposing them to bullying, rumor spreading, unrealistic views of other people's lives and peer pressure.

Facebook is the world's most popular social media site. According to the company, it has 2.7 billion monthly active users. Hundreds of millions of people also use the company's other products, including WhatsApp and Instagram.

But it had been criticised for everything from failing to protect user's privacy to not doing nothing enough to halt the spread of disinformation.

In a statement issued after the hearing, alleging that it harms teenagers, Facebook said that it didn't agree with Ms Haugen's 'characterisation of the many issues she testified about'. But it did agree that it's time to begin to create standard rules for the internet.

Other people focused on evidence that Facebook ignored it's own research that Instagram adversely affected the mental health of teenage girls.
