Squid game is just a game

The series focuses on a competition in which 456 players from various walks of life but heavily in debt play a series of games for children with fatal penalties for losing, for a chance to win a prize of 45.6 billion.  While the games provide the most exciting and suspenseful sequences of the show, it is the richly drawn participants and of course the brilliant performances that bring them to life that has made Squid Game such a success.

First there is the charming performance of Lee Jungjae as the silly but ultimately kind-hearted lead actor Gihun, through whose eyes we see most of the other candidates. Other standout feats were provided by Park Haesoo as Gihun's morally ambiguous childhood friend Sangwoo and Kim Jooryoung as the delightfully deranged cheater whose date with a gangster within the Games leads to chaos among contestants.

However, it is former model Jung Hoyeon who plays a tough North Korean defector who hopes to raise enough money to bring her brother out of an orphanage. A few hundred thousand followers on Instagram ago, Jung grew to over 13 million. It's safe to say that this won't be the last time you see them.
