Suspects Stealing During Curfew Arrested In Embu Caves

Some of the items recovered after seven suspected gangsters believed to have been stealing at night in Embu during the ongoing curfew were arrested.

Seven suspects assumed to be exploiting the ongoing anti- Corona-virus curfew and heavy rains to break into shops in Embu have been arrested in caves.

The suspected gangsters were arrested with assorted goods which are believed to have been stolen from broken premises and which included: four TV sets, clothes, shoes, alcohol, beer crates and empty bottles, and hospital apparatus stolen from a dispensary.

Embu County Police Commander Daniel Rukunga displayed the mixed stuff noting that most of them were stolen on the nights of April 14 and 15 when burglars broke into several shops, a bar and pork butchery.

The police chief said when the burglary was reported to them they got underway and launched a manhunt for them and arrested the suspects in Grogan, Shauri Yako and Dallas areas and that some were hiding in caves near River Kathita.

Runkunga explained that despite police officers working firmly to provide protection in the area, the thugs took advantage of heavy rains pounding the area to gain access into shops and stealing.

Owners of the properties thronged the station to identify their stolen properties, after hearing about their arrest.

The County Police Boss said the suspects will be prosecuted with the theft immediately investigation ends.

Rukunga defended his officers from allegations by residents that they were involved in the thefts noting none of the items was recovered from any officer.

He counseled traders to join together and hire watchmen to watch over their shops in order to supplement police officers.
