It has been a rough week for embattled Migori Governor Zacharia Okoth Obado as he is again involved in another scandal after only two years since he was charged with murder charges of his girlfriend Sharon Otieno. On Tuesday of 25th August, 2020, Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji ordered the arrest and prosecution of Governor Obado and his four children for embezzling a whooping sh73.4 million meant for Migori County. The new saga has come at very challenging times for the Governor who is still battling the murder charges out of jail.
During the investigation, the detectives unraveled the scheme that intricate a total sum of Sh73.4 million that were indirectly wired to Governor Okoth Obado through his three children. The amount in question was payments from 12 companies that have been trading with County Government of Migori since 2013. The mastermind behind the alleged corruption is said to be Jared Oluoch Kwaga. The Mistry man – Oluoch Kwaga- is said to have linked five members of his family including his mother and wife in drafting of a plan to coffer dry the County Government of Migori.
Alongside Obado and his Children, DPP Noordin Haji have also approved the prosecution of the directors of the 12 companies caught up in the middle of the graft. The companies are said to have been registered immediately Governor Obado was elected in the office back in 2013. Jared Kwaga and his henchmen will also be prosecuted on the same. The report reaching our desk is that 12 company alongside Kwaga’s five family members are said to have received tenders from the Migori County worth sh2 billion.
Governor Okoth Obado’s children who received the corruption money are: Jerry Zachary Okoth Achola Dan Okoth, and Susan Scarlet Akoth. Jerry received sh2.3 million, Achola Dan Okoth received sh 11.3 million and Susan Scarlet Akoth received sh1.9million all wired from the 12 companies.
