A burial ceremony turned chaotic at Thinu village, Kathiani sub county of Machakos county after health workers were attacked by locals.

The public health workers had arrived to conduct the burial of a COVID-19 victim who died at Machakos level five hospital.

However, the function turned from calm to messy after members of the family of the deceased and some of the members of the public decided to serve the officers with blows and kicks.

The unfortunate incident was confirmed by Machako's health boss Dr.Ancent Kituku who spoke to Operanews on phone.

He bitterly condemned the incident stating that the officers were only doing their work and deserved no beating.

Our public health officers had accompanied a dead body of someone who died from COVID-19 at Machakos level five to ensure the public health protocols are observed during the burial," said Kituku.

"Unfortunately while they were conducting the function family members and members of the public started attacking them and have injured some of our officers and it's very unfortunate because these people were venting their anger on the healthcare workers who were innocent," he added.

He said that the ministry of health has been working in collaboration with members of the public concerning COVID-19 and other matters and does not understand why they turned hostile.

He disclosed that the residents blocked the road to ensure the officers could not exit.

He said those injured have recorded statements with the police and investigations have commenced.

He said that members of the public should know that if they are not satisfied with any result they are free to seek a second opinion on whatever issue.

"It's very unfortunate to attack healthcare workers who were doing their duty, who are risking their lives to ensure that our loved ones are given a decent send-off," he said.
