Seme MP Overcome By Emotions Narrating The Plight Of Neglected Doctors Amid Covid-19 Battle

Hon. James Nyikal, a National Assembly Rep. for Seme Constituency broke down on Wednesday [yesterday] while telling his fellow legislators the challenges endured by doctors while on their duty.

Nyikal noted how medics have been facing victimization and frustrations, yet they risked themselves to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Everyone says medicine is a calling and doctors have to be patriotic; patriotism is not suicide," noted Hon. Nyikal also a professional doctor.

The meeting also featured the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Union (KMPDU) officials invited by the National Assembly Committee to find a resolution for a looming strike.

Among the grievances that medics want to be addressed is the unpaid salaries for medics working on a contract basis. Also, others include denied or withdrawn risk allowances.

A comprehensive medical cover is also another grievance, insufficient Covid-19 essentials, unceremonious dismissal by the devolved governments, and many others.

Nyikal noted how medics could not continue suffering in the arms of their bosses. He added how many lives had since been lost due to the past strikes by doctors, maintaining that they were fed up.

For once, doctors reportedly secured overwhelming support from legislators. KMPDU Secretary-General Chibanzi Mwachonda noted how medics were forced to dig deep their pockets to offset medical bills for their colleagues.

He added how as doctors they would risk no more, stating that they had shown enough patriotism. The session was concluded with a summon for the Health CS, Salaries and Remuneration Commission, Treasury Ministry, the Vice-Chancellors for Moi, Kenyatta, and Nairobi Universities plus governors too.

Vice-Chancellors will be required to tell why medicine lecturers lacked risk allowances among other benefits coming with increased exposure to the Covid-19 pandemic.
