Why Obesity is a risk factor to Corona virus infection

Obesity refers to the state where a person is overweight and his or her Body Mass Index (BMI) is greater than 30. Obesity occurs due to many factors such as poor lifestyle, lack of exercise and genetics. With obesity the risk of mortality due to corona virus infection is high especially to adults over 60 years of age.

Corona is an infection caused by corona virus Infection (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome CoV-2) that affects respiratory tract especially the lungs hence difficulty in breathing. It is a risk factor to individuals with underlying conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer and cardiovascular diseases. It is a great risk for the elderly especially those above 58 years of age and infants.

Obesity is termed as a metabolic disease since it alters system metabolism in manners such as insulin resistance, elevated serum glucose and chronic low-grade inflammation. Hypoglycaemia a condition in which someone has low blood sugar level is highly linked with obesity. With infection of corona virus, serum glucose not controlled can lead to impairment of immune cell function.

Poor dietary patterns such as consumption of fatty foods can influence inflammatory responses. Omega 3 fatty acids can bring about anti-inflammatory responses while Omega 6 fatty acids can mediate pro-inflammatory production of prostaglandins.

Obese individuals have large waist circumference and huge body mass hence increased needs to supportive therapies such as mask ventilation hence a burden to this vulnerable group. Respiratory dysfunctions and obstructive sleep apnoea in obese individuals increase the risk of pulmonary hypertension and cardiac stress.

Obesity affects immune system since increased BMI is linked with greater frequency of anti-inflammatory CD4 T cells. Increased anti-inflammatory cells may prevent the ability of reducing infection since inflammatory responses are needed to control spread of virus.

Obese individuals have accumulation of adipocytes and adipocyte like cells that may increase production of cytokines and activation of immune system when infected by corona virus. Adipocyte hypertrophy and accumulation of lipids may be an immune reservoir that obese people become saturated with pro-inflammatory immune cell subsets.

Adults who are obese on contraction of corona virus infection have higher burdens of mechanical respiratory therapy. Men have a higher burden that women on corona infection. A man who is obese has increased aromatase activity that can convert testerone to estradiol.

Fatty acid such as cholesterol is important in the spread of enveloped RNA viruses. SARS-CoV relative to SARS-CoV 2uses cholesterol in facilitating viral budding, allowing the spread to neighbouring cells. An individual who is obese has increased severity of COVID -19 in patients with fatty liver disease.

Corona virus is a threat to all and especially to elderly obesity is a great challenge hence these individuals should be cautious of not contracting the infection.
